Treasury Officially Extends Tax Filing & Payment Deadlines To July 15, 2020

Kelly Phillips ErbMarch 20, 2020May 4, 2020

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin announced this morning, via Twitter, that the tax filing deadline has been extended to July 15, 2020:

At @realDonaldTrump’s direction, we are moving Tax Day from April 15 to July 15. All taxpayers and businesses will have this additional time to file and make payments without interest or penalties.

— Steven Mnuchin (@stevenmnuchin1) March 20, 2020

Earlier this week, the Treasury Secretary Mnuchin and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) extended payment deadlines, but did not officially extend the deadline for filing. And yesterday, the IRS released additional guidance but also did not officially extend the deadline for filing. (Yes, it’s confusing.)

However, the IRS confirmed the position by retweeting Mnuchin:

(I guess with a pandemic and quarantine, social media is becoming more vital – we’re even being governed and informed by tweets.)

The IRS also issued guidance late Friday (March 20, 2020) confirming the change and other details.

Clearly, things are happening at a rapid-fire pace these days. Keep checking back for details.
