NC Extends Tax Deadline for State Returns

Kelly Phillips ErbApril 18, 2011

The N.C. Department of Revenue has announced on its website that it will waive late filing and late payment penalties for taxpayers who were affected by the April 16 storms.

Penalties will be waived on state taxes and returns that are due between April 18 and May 1. According to the Department of Revenue, state law will not allow the Department to waive the interest.

To take advantage of the extension, taxpayers should include Form NC-5500 (available here) with a late payment or return; check the block on the form for “natural disaster.” If, for some reason you can’t access the form, you can attach a letter explaining why the payment or return is late.

That’s great that the state is allowing an extension. Too bad the federal government couldn’t offer one as well because I’m sure that if it affected people getting their state returns in, it also affected them getting their federal returns in. But I have a feeling there will be some sort of exception for those who’s information was literally swept away from them. I’d hope so, at least.
