Collect ALL taxes through a sales tax.
I like the rule of 10.
10% Federal,
10% State,
10% local.
In this way all can pay the same amount, not just those of us who have a job.
I fully agree with the sales tax concept, but I’m not sure the 10/10/10 split would be appropriate.
The FairTax is a federal sales tax, in fact some call it a national retail sales tax. It’s considerably more than 10%, but it’s revenue neutral (collects the same amount as now) and is paid only on services and new goods (you don’t pay the tax on a used car or a used house).
I figured it up several years ago. I kept very meticulous records, and before the end of the year it became apparent I was paying over half (that’s right, 50%) of my gross income in taxes of some sort or another. I was self employed at the time, so I had to pay both halves of the social security confiscation. I was not a happy camper.
Appropriate ? How would 90% less government be a bad thing ?
When you look at the national debt and see that it is approaching 10 trillion dollars it is clear that we are not paying enough taxes.
We elect the people that we want and get the government that we deserve, because we will not elect people who will tell us the truth.
Taxes should be based upon the amount of revenue necessary to pay current expenditures and retire the national debt within a reasonable term. Any new expenditures should be funded when they are enacted with real revenue and not projections and funny money.
Unfortunately, that is not going to happen.
