Here’s How You Can Help Out After Hurricane Sandy

Kelly Phillips ErbNovember 1, 2012July 5, 2020

Since posting my article on Hurricane Sandy, I’ve been asked about what was still needed for the clean-up and rebuilding post-Hurricane Sandy. I received some additional information today and I’m passing it along.

A few who have asked for specifics:

  • Keyport Central School Shelter
They need lactose-free milk, canned fruit, adult diapers, D batteries, men’s and women’s underwear (priority), small flashlights, puzzle books, and games.
335 Broad St., Keyport, NJ 07735
  • Island Heights Volunteer Fire Company #1
Dry pasta, cereal, oatmeal, lunch meats, bread/rolls, Gatorade powder mix, protein bars, cereal bars, small bottles of OJ, small bottles of Gatorade, bottled water
15 Lake Avenue, PO Box 316, Island Heights, NJ 08732
  • Toms River East High School
Shoes, socks, small flashlights, tampons, pads, baby food, baby formula, bottles, batteries, band-aids, Advil, Tylenol, large
    cardboard boxes, packing tape
1225 Raider Way, Toms River, NJ
  • Southern Regional High School in Manahawkin
Bendable straws, stirrers, decaf coffee, decaf tea, herbal tea, clean underwear, compression socks for the elderly, clothing infants thru adult, blankets, pillows, and any food or drinks (no homemade food), playing cards, coloring books and crayons, crossword puzzles.
90 Cedar Bridge Road Manahawkin, NJ 08050

I’ve also been told that Sea Isle and Long Beach Island were both pretty devastated. If you’d like to send a card or note of support, those fire departments – all of which are volunteer – have addresses as follows:

Sea Isle City Volunteer Fire Department
223 JFK Blvd.
Sea Isle City, NJ 08423

Beach Haven Volunteer Fire Company
Amber and Bay Avenue
Beach Haven, NJ 08008

Surf City Fire Company
713 Long Beach Blvd
Surf City, NJ 08008

If you have any additional information about an opportunity to help out, please contact me and I’ll pass it along. I’ve received really lovely inquiries from all across the country as well as internationally, including a tweet from Pakistan (!), from folks wanting to help. It’s a nice reminder there is goodness in the world.

You can also check out New Jersey Needs on Facebook. Please note this is not a charitable organization but a place for folks to post what they may need. Use caution and common sense.

Finally, NBC will be hosting a one-hour telethon and concert on Friday night to benefit Hurricane Sandy relief efforts through the Red Cross. “Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together” will be hosted by The Today Show’s Matt Lauer and will feature New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi as well as New Yorker Billy Joel. Also slated to appear are Sting and Christina Aguilera. The telethon will be broadcast live from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. EST on the east coast and will be tape delay for the West Coast.
