Election Day 2010 Freebies: What Do They Mean?

Kelly Phillips ErbNovember 2, 2010

This election is big for all parties. That’s both a good thing – and a not so good thing – depending on who you are.

Of course, in the effort to get out the vote, we’re going to hear about allegations of voter fraud, vote tampering and bribery. Increasingly, these issues are associated with the so-called Election Day freebies like free cups of coffee. Is it vote buying? Is it income? Here’s my take from 2008: Are Election Day Freebies A Violation of Federal Law?

Thanks to Steve O’Donnell (via twitter) for the reminder!

    Oh, honestly.

Voter fraud is far more rare than either side would like to believe. Your guy/gal doesn’t win, and it’s so hard to sit back and say “Welp, that’s democracy for you!” because you disagree with *everything* s/he says. Rather than believe that you disagree with half of voting America, you decide, “Hey… I bet that on top of politically opposite from me, that politician is also super corrupt and set up a complicated voter fraud system!”

This happened with the last three presidents, and I don’t think it’s going to stop there.

I’m not saying it’s impossible or that it never has happened ever, but causing a fuss everytime is just beginning to sound like the boy who cried wolf.

Kelly, did you see any of the signs from the Rally this weekend? I saw one that made me laugh, “I HATE TAXES but I like roads, schools, police, military, healthcare, social security, and transportation.”
