IRS Announces Processing Date for Delayed Returns

Kelly Phillips ErbJanuary 21, 2011

I can see this scenario all over the country on Valentine’s Day: the lights are dim and soft music is playing in the background. You and your significant other take a sip of wine, look at each other meaningfully and agree that you’re ready… to press send on the computer and e-file your tax returns.

That’s right, the IRS has chosen to ruin scar mark the most romantic day of the year with the announcement that beginning February 14, they’ll start processing those returns that were initially delayed. Prior to that date, the IRS will not accept tax returns for processing for taxpayers who are claiming itemized deductions on Schedule A, the higher education tuition and fees deduction on Form 8917 or the educator expenses deduction. All other returns can be processed immediately.

Can’t you just feel the love?

Well, at least they’ve given us a firm date. Last I read (until I checked my e-mail today and saw the alert) was “middle of Feb at the earliest, but possibly not until the end of Feb.”

I’m still crossing my fingers until Valentine’s Day.
